- Big Belly Bins

Newsletter Article - March 2007

In working to sustain Cape Cod, our goal is to encourage small actions that lead to community benefits if taken by large numbers. Think trash, for example, and what a difference we can make simply by keeping the Cape clean.

Trash is the focus of an innovative product that we've purchased and made available for use at Cape Cod Community College. The product is The BigBelly™ and it's now sunning itself in front of the Lyndon P. Lorusso Applied Technology building.

The BigBelly™ is an automatic, solar-powered, compacting trash receptacle. Compacting the contents uses space more efficiently and reduces the amount of trash that spills over. The sun charges the battery that powers the compacting and, fully charged, the BigBelly™ can run for thirty days completely in the dark.

And because the BigBelly™ is closed to the elements, it's design is well suited to outdoor locations near beaches where seagulls and other animals easily access the trash. You might soon see these along the Cape Cod Canal or at the National Seashore.

We're happy to introduce one to the Cape because it also demonstrates how businesses and nonprofits can work constructively to address quality of life concerns. Produced by Seahorse Power Company in Needham MA, the BigBelly Cordless Compaction System™:

* Reduces trash pick-up by 4 times or more which reduces the number of truck trips needed and the emissions that reduce air quality;

* Eliminates overflowing bins;

* Keeps litter in and birds and animals out;

* Goes anywhere - no trenching or wiring required;

* Relies on solar-powered, automatic compaction that is reliable and safe to use; and

* Provides an excellent backdrop for marketing purposes.

We don't want you to take your trash to the college, but if you get a chance, check it out there and let us know what you think. And if you have a new product that intrigues you as one that presents direct sustainability benefits, please let us know about it.
