Moving into the Realm of Action
Newsletter Article - March 2007
The Cape Cod Youth Council on Sustainability is a youth led organization dedicated to the preservation of Cape Cod's resources and finding a balance between the human community and the environment.
The council was founded in 2003 by sixteen students and we now represent schools all over the Cape. The council has carried on through several generations of the Cape's finest youth leaders and is continuing to make a difference.
Our council wrote an action plan outlining the steps to create a sustainable future for Cape Cod. This plan has been the guiding document for the council and our hope is to carry out the suggestions we put forth.
We have already begun to fulfill some of those suggestions. We have created sustainable starter kits to help people become environmentally friendly in their everyday lives, created a sustainable garden for the local Massachusetts Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children, given sustainability achievement awards to local businesses, and participated in several other community service projects.
The Cape Youth Council on Sustainability, after research and debate on the matter, wishes to move into the realm of action on the eminent matter of the Nantucket Wind Farm proposal. We recognize both the downsides and benefits reaped by the proposal and feel people should be aware of these. We realize the importance of opinion and passion, as well as the destructive nature of silence, so we have been motivated to take a stand against ambivalence. The vehemently heated opinions of our members creates conflict and we cannot stand as a unified council on this issue. But we also cannot be silent.
With our prided passions, we are crafting an event to fairly represent and educate both the views of the project. We acknowledge the great benefits offered by the proposal, such as its reduction of global warming, and its implication for the future pioneers towards this goal. We also can see the downsides of the project, including its possible impact on local marine life, business, and fishing.
We hope that this event will educate those who attend it, so that we as Cape Codders can reach a mutual agreement to save and sustain our precious homeland and at the same time lead the world in energy innovation. The clock is ticking on our opportunity to change the course of history for our planet and its inhabitants. We ask for your opinions and support and eagerly await the opportunity to find common ground.
